This is a poem I wrote a number of years ago. I got the inspiration when I read Tobymac, Michael Tait, and Wallbuilders' book, Under God. I grieve at how this once mighty nation is changing and would beg you to join me in prayer for a nation that was once under God. Ask God for a revival in our beautiful land. Pray that we would return to our foundational roots of being founded under God.
Our nation founded on that holy rock,
The rock upon which no other realm stands.
"In God, they trust," the derider did mock.
They scoffed at us from afar in foreign lands.
Despite disdain, for freedom did we fight,
And kept our feet upon that foundation.
We gained independence and reached our height.
"Under God," we established our nation.
Rise we did, but soon began to plummet,
When we chained people because of their skin.
Causing us to drop from the steep summit,
We made slaves of those who had more melanin.
Rounded, whipped, bred, and traded like cattle,
The slaves waited for freedom patiently.
At last, after many a great battle,
Those who'd faced anguish and pain were now free.
We rose again from out of the mire,
When others were not made to segregate.
At long last, revival was on fire.
"Under God" were we: that was no debate.
But alas! From that rock have we departed,
Preferring contention over calmness.
Our former morals we have discarded.
We abandoned beauty for ugliness.
And now we slouch upon some vile sod:
We're plainly not "one nation under God."
We can't forget God in this great nation! He is the One that made it great!
I love this poem! It is so appropriate for these times! Thank you Debi!
